Where to begin with process automation
Not everything needs automating. The right start is work that repeats often and follows clear rules.

Write the process down first
Automation speeds up an existing job; it only makes a muddled job muddle faster. So the first step is not choosing software but writing down, step by step, how the work is done today.
Pick the work that repeats often
The first candidate should have clear rules and come up often: moving data from a form, asking for an approval, preparing a report. A small example delivers quickly and earns the team's trust.
Keep people in the process
There will always be exceptions. Good automation recognises a case that needs a decision, passes it to the right person and keeps a record of what was done and why.
